CARTIF PROJECTS

BIOSELENER

Development of functional systems for the supply of solid biomass for energy purposes

Description

Development of functional systems for supply of solid biomass for energy purposes, based on the selective zonal implantation of agroforestry crops. CARTIF works to develop a model of woody and herbaceous crops for energy purposes, by combining biomass and optimizing growing of agricultural and forest species. A management plan will be generated based on production flexibility to achieve a significant competitive advantage, ensuring biomass supply and attenuating the productive seasonality. The implementation will provide the knowledge that allows the operational installation of the biomass crops, in Spain and later its introduction in the Mediterranean climatic areas (Europe and America).

Objectives

BIOSELENER project aims to develop a model of woody and herbaceous crops for energy purposes, based on the application of new technologies, research on the combination of biomass raw materials and on the optimization of the growth of different forest and agricultural species.

Actions

  • Biomass management plan development: productive flexibility and forestry techniques.
  • Variation of planting framework: influence on the energy capacity of different crops.
  • Species selection criteria: Fast-growing (high production potential); vigorous re-growths after cutting; suitable for lands with non-food agricultural uses.
  • P. x euramericana, S. purpurea, R. pseudoacacia, U. pumila, Miscanthus spp.

Expected results

  • Technical knowledge through the application of available technology to obtain biomass products at a competitive cost.
  • Characterization of the economic, logistic and commercial variables of the biomass market that are crucial for production decisions.
  • Viability of other complementary activities within the plantation that gives added value.
  • New products derived from secondary use of established crops.

PHENOLEXA

Agricultural side streams-olives, wine, chicory and onions- are rich in bioactive compounds (BAC) and have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Their full potential has yet to be realised, due to a lack of technologies that preserve the complexity and functionality of these BAC.
