REWARDHeat

Recovery of renewable and residual heat available at low temperature.

Description

The overall objective of REWARDHeat is to demonstrate a new generation of low-temperature district heating and cooling (DHC) networks, which will recover low-grade renewables (RES) and waste heat (WH) available at low temperature. Focusing on energy sources available within the urban context allows to maximize the replicability potential of the decentralized solutions. REWARDHeat will promote punctual metering, thermal storage management, network smart control as means to optimise the exploitation of RES and WH in DHC networks. This approach enables a paradigm shift: thermal energy will not be seen as a commodity anymore, rather it will be sold as a service to the customers.

 

Objectives

  • To integrate effectively multiple urban renewable and waste energy sources.
  • To develop innovative technologies for flexible use of heat in DHC networks.
  • To demonstrate digitalisation solutions allowing to optimise the management of the DHC network.
  • To develop business models and financial schemes to enable large public and private investments to be mobilized.

Actions

  • Mapping of urban heat recovery potential in the EU.
  • New business models and contractual schemes.
  • Implementation of 4 recovery solutions in urban environments adapted to different types of sources: data centers, hospitals, U-railway, wastewater.
  • Monitoring and control systems.
  • Performance and impact evaluation of project demonstrations.
  • Dissemination, communication and exploitation of results.

  • GIS-based pre-design tool of RES-based DHC networks.
  • Standardized Heat Pump packages for DHC substations.
  • Novel prefab 4-pipe distribution system.
  • Storage units for optimized energy accumulation.
  • Advanced smart control: datamining platform and Model Predictive Control.
  • REWARDHeat Serious Business Game.
  • Novel business models and financing schemes adapted to low- and neutral-temperature DHC.
