EMERGE

Energy System Modelling for Green Development of Africa

Description

EMERGE aims to provide African policy makers, academics, investors and citizens with tools and knowledge to increase clean energy and sustainable resource use, reducing cultural and socio-economic gaps. EMERGE will design and test an EMERGE ToolBox to optimise the use of current resources considering social, climatic, economic and technical constraints. In addition, it will create an EMERGE Knowledge Base to bring together initiatives and activities to facilitate AU-EU knowledge exchange. EMERGE will develop participatory knowledge communities in Morocco, the Niger River region (Mali/Nigeria) and Mozambique.

Objectives

  • Establish connections with other AU-EU cooperation projects to share strategies and results of the EMERGE project.
  • Showcase the EMERGE toolbox as an innovative solution to support policy makers in energy analysis and planning.
  • Analyse energy regulations and markets to identify opportunities to facilitate the transition to clean energy technologies in Africa.
  • Encourage the adoption of EMERGE solutions to support the energy transition in Africa through actions that strengthen cooperation and research and development strategies.

Actions

  • Define a Common System Architecture (CSA) through a co-design process for the integration of the project tools.
  • Implement and connect the EMERGE Knowledge Base to the tool database.
  • Establish connections with other AU-EU cooperation projects to share EMERGE project strategies and results.

Expected Results

  • Design of a platform that will include the WEF Nexus (Open Access) model. Throughout the project, the way in which this result will be exploited will be analysed.

R&D Line

  • Research and development of integrated assessment models (IAM) to support the definition of climate change and energy transition policies.
