SCO2OP-TES

sCO2 Operating Pumped Thermal Energy Storage for grid/industry coperation

Description

The SCO2OP-TES project focuses on the development of technologies for storing electricity in the form of heat, which is then converted back into electricity (P2H2P – power-to-heat-to-power). The aim of the project is to validate an innovative pilot plant for pumped supercritical CO2 thermal energy storage. This initiative aims to revolutionise the role of industrial waste heat in optimising circular efficiency and promoting grid flexibility.

Objectives

  • Validate the performance of sCO2-based P2H2P cycles at the UNIGE-TP site.
  • Validate models (dynamic, thermo-economic, grid impact) for SCO2OP-TES replication.
  • Demonstration of the economic, environmental and security sustainability of SCO2OP-TES.
  • Dissemination and exploitation.

Actions

  • Development of a grid flexibility potential assessment tool for replication analysis.
  • Power plants and grid integration (in different contexts and scales) of SCO2OP-TES storage.
  • Comparison with other storage technologies in terms of grid flexibility services.
  • Dissemination and exploitation.

Expected Results

  • Network flexibility potential assessment tools for replication analysis.
  • Technical and economic study of the SCO2OP-TES solution and its comparison with other storage technologies.

R&D Line

  • Research on control algorithms for flexible demand, demand response and market participation.

TIGON

TIGON

The proliferation of renewable energies and the electric charges that operates with continuous current originates a growing interest in electric grids that operates with continuous current. This is due to the higher efficiency, security, flexibility and feasability that grids have than those ones that operates with alternate current.
