The SMARTeeSTORY consortium, composed of 13 partners from six different countries, held its kick-off meeting last week in Genoa, Italy, to discuss the main objectives and establish a roadmap for this initiative that will seek to transform historic buildings into climate-neutral landmarks. Non-residential historic buildings play a crucial role in today’s Europe, however, their high energy consumption and difficult retrofitting requirements put their necessary study in the spotlight. In view of this fact, the SMARTeeSTORY project aims to accelerate the digital transformation of this type of building through the combination of energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and smart and digital technologies.

This proposal aims to convert these historic monuments into climate-neutral buildings while preserving their unique identity. It will have three demonstrators in Spain, Latvia and Netherlands to implement it. In addition, it actively promotes the exchange of knowledge and best practices between stakeholders, including building owners, energy service companies and public authorities.

CARTIF’s role in this proposal will focus on the development of the digital twin and Digital Building Logbook services. It will be responsible for the definition of the control strategies and optimisation criteria, as well as the development of algorithms for the optimal control of the Granada demonstration site. CARTIF will lead the demonstration activities of the digital solutions proposed for the three demonstrations sites in order to reach the technological readiness level.

“For best results, SMARTeeSTORY demonstrates the proposed digital solutions in three real-life demonstration sites located in different climate regions, where energy renovation is not an option. We will gather and share lessons learnt so that there will be even more digitalisation of historic buildings in the future, across Europe and beyond.” – Matteo Porta, RINA-C, Project Coordinator.
