VALORA-0

Recovery of food by-products and waste. Towards zero waste.

Description

VALORA-0 focuses on the valorisation of CAMPOFRÍO FOOD GROUP’s waste flows. Different actions are proposed, firstly, the energy recovery of surplus flows to obtain energy for self-consumption (energy efficiency). To this end, a process for generating renewable gases (biohydrogen and biomethane) and volatile fatty acids is proposed. Secondly, the valorisation of brines and dirty salt to achieve water purification and recover salt or alternative elements from it.

Objectives

  • Design a pre-treatment process to maximise the biodegradability of waste streams.
  • Design and optimise a process to generate biohydrogen and/or biomethane and volatile fatty acids.
  • Design and optimise a process for the recovery of dissolved salt or alternative elements from salt.

Actions

  • Energy recovery from surplus flows.
  • Recovery of brine and dirty salt.

Expected Results

  • The energy recovery of surplus flows and other waste from the processing of meat products. Progress in the development of technologies for the generation of biohydrogen and/or biomethane and volatile fatty acids from the remaining fraction and high load effluents generated in this type of industry.
  • Recovery of salt from curing processes (dirty salt) and from injection brines involved in the production of cooked meat products. Progress in the design of a process for the recovery of alternative elements from salt as easily marketable chemical products.
